Food Bank

she’s stuck in the wheel chair.
he bathes her and fixes her hair
and pushes her down the street.
like so many others, they can’t make ends meet
and, as a last resort, turn to charities
for food, so they have something to eat.
they were doing just fine, their kids are all grown
and out on their own.
then, she had a stroke
and he lost his job.
like so many folks,
they could no longer pay for their home
and the bank foreclosed.
now they’re in a section eight one bedroom apartment,
the heat and hot water is included. sorry, no pets allowed (cats or dogs).
in the basement, there’s a storage compartment.
they’ll be there until he finds another job.

each day, the faces change
and the stories vary.
but the hope is the same:
to get some food and hope it will carry
them through a week or maybe two.
a few bags won’t go far.
we wish there was more.
for now, that’s all we can do.

Scriptures:

Luke 14:13-14

But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed. Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous."

Matthew 19:21

Jesus told him, “If you want to be perfect, go and sell all your possessions and give the money to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”
